Karamel Star Agrialliance

What we put our hearts to:

Environmental sustainability is also a core principle; we promote responsible shea nut collection and eco-friendly practices that benefit the local ecosystem and communities while addressing the challenge of limited market access.

CORE ACTIVITIES AND VALUE CHAIN

The activities at Karamel Star Agri Alliance fall within two primary verticals: crop cultivation and shea butter production. Each segment of the business leverages an inclusive approach, drawing upon the resources and expertise of local women and farmers to create a sustainable, community-oriented value chain. The company’s network includes 635 women shea nut collectors, 58 women shea butter processors, and 150 farmers across fifteen communities. This model of integrated support ensures both quality production and economic empowerment, fostering a strong sense of shared success.

Crop Cultivation and Aggregation:

The crop cultivation aspect of the business focuses on rice, maize, and soybeans three staple crops with strong demand locally and regionally. The company cultivates 300 acres of land across the savannah Region. Karamel Star Also aggregates from small holder farmers across the entire northern belt.

Support to farmers

Karamel Star has operates an out grower scheme with over 200 farmers, who are based across 8 communities in the savannah region. They are provided with input support that includes seeds, fertilizers, and agrochemicals. Additionally, Karamel Star supplies ploughing services to assist farmers in field preparation, as well as threshing services post-harvest to ensure that yields are properly processed and ready for distribution. By offering these comprehensive support services, the company helps to reduce the risk and resource burden on smallholder farmers, ensuring that they can focus on maximizing yield and quality.

Shea Butter Production

Shea butter production is a major pillar of the company’s offerings, and Karamel Star Agri Alliance takes great pride in producing a premium certified organic product. The shea nuts are sourced from over 600 trained women collectors who gather the nuts sustainably from wild trees, ensuring that the production process respects the natural environment. These nuts are then processed by a group of 58 skilled women, who use traditional methods enhanced by training provided by the company. This dual focus on quality and environmental responsibility allows Karamel Star Agri Alliance to deliver shea butter that meets both local expectations and the stringent standards of international markets.

RICE - "Nkaara"

Rice, a staple food for over half the world's population, particularly in Asia and Africa, is the seed of the grass species Oryza sativa (or less commonly, Oryza glaberrima).

Here's a more detailed look at rice:

  • What it is: Rice is a cereal grain and a major source of carbohydrates.
  • Where it's grown: It's a staple food in many parts of Asia and Africa.
  • Types of rice: There are many different types of rice, including long-grain, short-grain, and basmati.

Maize (Corn)

Maize, Zea mays L. (corn), is the most abundantly produced cereal in the world. It is grown in every continent except Antarctica. About 50 species exist and consist of different colors, textures, and grain shapes and sizes. White, yellow, and red are the most common cultivated maize types. The white and yellow varieties are preferred by most people depending on the region

Soybean

In fact, it is noteworthy that nearly 80% of the soybean crop produced globally is utilized as feed for livestock. This feed primarily supports the production of various animal products, with particular emphasis on beef, chicken, eggs, and dairy items such as milk, cheeses, butter, and yogurt. Additionally, soy oil plays a significant role in our culinary practices, serving as a popular cooking oil. Beyond the kitchen, soy oil can also be found in a wide array of consumer products, including margarine, chocolate, ice cream, and baked goods. Furthermore, its versatile properties make soy oil a common ingredient in various cosmetics and soaps, highlighting the extensive impact of soybeans in both our diet and daily life.
